Tip leads police to wanted man

July 27, 2006

A tip led Howard County police to the hiding spot of a man who had slipped out of Howard County General Hospital after nearly drowning while trying to escape arrest, police said.

Police spokeswoman Sherry Llewellyn said that the caller will receive a $500 reward in the arrest of Joaquin Leycock, 29, of Columbia. Police said he had been staying at a house in the 5300 block of Carriage Court in Baltimore and was arrested early yesterday.

He was originally pulled over for speeding. After the officer spotted what appeared to cocaine in the car, Leycock fled and fell into a pond, police said.

Leycock took a $6,000 heart monitor with him when he left the hospital, according to police. He has been charged with drug distribution and possession in the July 6 traffic stop and the theft of the monitor, police said.
