Murder-for-hire conviction stands, life term expected

July 27, 2006|By MATTHEW DOLAN | MATTHEW DOLAN,SUN REPORTER

A federal judge in Baltimore rejected this week a call from lawyers for Solothal "Itchy Man" Thomas to dismiss his recent murder-for-hire conviction. U.S. District Court Judge Catherine C. Blake cited earlier courtroom discussions on the issue in a brief order dismissing the post-trial request. Defense attorneys for Thomas had argued that Blake inappropriately gave an additional instruction to jurors who later found Thomas and his co-defendant guilty of the 2001 murder of a Milford Mill man. Thomas is now expected to receive a mandatory life sentence.
