National Night Out party is Aug. 1

Westminster City Police will sponsor a National Night Out event block party Aug. 1.

Neighborhoods are encouraged to hold their own parties in the evening.

City police will provide activities such as face painting, swimming, food, crafts and games.

Finksburg council's picnic is Thursday

The Finksburg Planning and Citizens Council will hold its annual picnic at 6 p.m. Thursday at Sandy Mount Park.

Senior center slates nutritional talk

The Westminster Senior Center, 125 Stoner Ave., will present a nutrition talk at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow on "Water Is Essential."

Outdoor movies run through August

Westminster City Recreation will sponsor Outdoor Movie nights at 9 p.m. Fridays through August at the city playground off Longwell Avenue.

Scheduled movies are: Nanny McPhee, Aug. 4; Wallace & Gromit, Aug. 11; The Goonies, Aug. 18; Hoodwinked, Aug. 25.

The Carroll County Safe Kids Coalition will sponsor "buckle up" night Aug. 11 before the movie. The Gathering Place nondenominational church will give sodas and popcorn to the first 100 people to arrive Aug. 25.

People can take a lawn chair and popcorn or buy concessions at the site.

Yoga and pottery on tap at library

Westminster branch library, 50 E. Main St., will offer:

"Try Yoga." Jennifer Lerche will teach basic moves to teens and adults at 7 p.m. Thursday.

"Get Curious." Curious George will share stories and activities with children at 1 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. Saturday.

"Pottery Painting Party." Staff from Glazed to Perfection will share tips and provide materials for painting pottery for teens at 7 p.m. July 31.

Book Club. Adults will discuss One Woman's Army by Janis Karpinski.

"Let's Talk Classics." Teens and adults to discuss Looking Backward by Edward Bellamy at 7 p.m. Aug. 10. Registration is required for some programs.

Basket bingo is Aug. 26

The Freedom District Lions and Lionesses will hold a double basket bingo Aug. 26 at the Freedom District fire hall on Route 32.

Doors will open at 9:30 a.m. for a continental breakfast. The first session of bingo will begin at 10:30 a.m., and a second session will start at 5 p.m.

Tickets for meals, 40 games and door prizes are $40. Raffles and King Tut games for baskets also will be available. More than 80 Longaberger baskets will be given away.

At least 100 reservations are required by Aug. 12 for the event to be held.

Beach party planned at senior center

South Carroll Senior Center, 5745 Bartholow Road, Eldersburg, has announced activities.

Gail Jones will discuss hoarding and clutter at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.

A beach party will be held and June birthdays celebrated at noon Thursday.

A trip to Midway, Del., will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Aug. 7.

Acupuncture lesson planned at library

Eldersburg branch library, 6400 W. Hemlock Drive, is offering:

"Acupuncture: What's The Point?" at 7 p.m. Wednesday for adults. Lili He, from the Carroll Acupuncture Clinic in Eldersburg, will explain the basics of acupuncture, what it is, how it works and what ailments it can help.

Summer Arts and Crafts will be held for all ages from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.

"Hawaiian Blast." KidWorks will present a Hawaiian-themed story time with songs and activities for all ages (younger than 3 with an adult) at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

"Live and In Person: Clifford the Big Red Dog." Clifford will visit young readers at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. July 31.

"Happy Birthday Harry Potter." Quiditch, Harry Potter Jeopardy, a relative of Professor Trelawney and birthday cake will be featured at 7 p.m. July 31 for teens.

"Meet Poe the Ravens Mascot" at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 2.

Carnival fun starts tomorrow

The Mount Airy Volunteer Fire Company will hold its annual carnival tomorrow through Saturday on the carnival grounds at Twin Arch Road and Route 27.

Rides, games, music and food will be featured. Discounted ride nights will be held tomorrow, Tuesday and Wednesday.

Special events include the third annual karaoke contest Wednesday; the firemen's parade at 7 p.m. Thursday, and a fireworks display Saturday. Karaoke contestants must register starting at 5:30 p.m. and must be 18 or older. The entry fee is $20, and cash prizes will be awarded.
