Nominations open for FSA committees

Farmers, ranchers and other agriculture producers can nominate eligible candidates for the 2007 elections to serve on the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Farm Service Agency (FSA) county committees.

Elections are being held for the southern part of the county, including Westminster, Sykesville, Mount Airy and Finksburg.

Committees make decisions on county commodity price-support loan eligibility, establishment of allotments and yields, conservation programs, disaster programs, employment and other issues.

Eligible candidates must participate or cooperate in an FSA program, be of eligible to vote and live in the county or area where the election is being held. Individuals may nominate themselves or others.

County committees must annually review the local administrative area boundaries to ensure fair representation of socially disadvantaged producers.

Deadline for nominating candidates is Aug. 1.

Security guide for farms released

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is offering a guide entitled Pre-Harvest Security Guidelines and Checklist 2006 to help agricultural producers enhance security at the farm level.

These practical measures help to protect against natural disasters, as well as the introduction of plant or animal diseases.

Food and agriculture biosecurity is an important component of USDA's mission. Improving awareness through outreach and communications is a key element of USDA's homeland security efforts.

Guidelines have been developed for general agriculture, dairy, crops, cattle and poultry security.

The guide is available through the Westminster office of the Farm Service Agency.
