August programs for kids at the library

Next month's programs for children at the central library include "Meet Sherlock Holmes," the legendary detective who will be portrayed by members of the local Sherlock Holmes society, Watson's Tin Box. Holmes will share some of his adventures and reveal how he cracked his toughest cases.

The program for children ages 8 to 10 will be held at 11 a.m. Aug. 5. Registration begins Saturday. The library is at 10375 Little Patuxent Parkway.

"All Together Now," a program of stories, songs and activities for children ages 1 to 6 and adults, will be offered at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. Tuesdays, Aug. 1-15; 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. Wednesdays, Aug. 2-16; and 10 a.m. Saturdays, Aug. 5-26 at the library. Registration is not required.

"Play Partners," stories, baby games and musical activities followed by a short playtime for infants and toddlers to 23 months, will be offered at 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Thursdays, Aug. 3-17, and at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. Fridays, Aug. 4-18. Registration is not required.

"Kindergarten, Here We Come!" -- stories and activities for ages 4 and 5, is scheduled for 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Aug. 21 and 10:30 a.m. Aug. 22. Registration begins Aug. 14.

Promoted -- Rogelio Martinez, son of Esequiel and Ivonne Castillo of River Hill, has been promoted to Air Force Airman Two. He is an air transportation apprentice assigned to the 436th Airlift Wing, Dover Air Force Base, Del.

Classes -- Salima Aza is offering weekly belly-dancing lessons at Slayton House in Wilde Lake Village Center. The classes, sponsored by Wilde Lake Community Association, are held Tuesdays through Aug. 15. A class for beginners ages 14 and older meets from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays. The cost is $63 for seven weeks; classes have begun, but registration is open. Columbia residents receive a 10 percent discount. Registration is required. 410-730-3987.`Seussical' -- Families are invited to Seussical, a Slayton House Conservatory production based on the children's books of Theodore Geisel (Dr. Seuss) at 7 p.m. Aug. 3 and 4. Tickets are $7; $5 for children and students.

The Wilde Lake Community Association will offer three new fall classes by First Course: The Educaterers at Slayton House. "Culinary Kids," a chance for children, ages 4 to 10, to decorate cookies with Halloween and Thanksgiving themes, will be held from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Oct. 18. The cost is $20, including food and the use of equipment, with a 10 percent discount for Columbia lien payers. November and December classes are to be announced. Sock hop -- The Department of Citizen Services' Office on Aging will sponsor a Sock Hop Dinner Dance from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Aug. 11 at the Bain Center, 5470 Ruth Keeton Way, Columbia. The high school gymnasium-style dance will include diner food and live music of the 1950s by the Minauldi Trio. Tickets, available in advance, are $7. 410-313-7213.
