A 19-year-old Lutherville man was killed yesterday afternoon when he was run over by a piece of earth-moving equipment while he and other employees of a landscaping firm worked outside their Carroll County business, state police reported.

Joseph A. Miranda of the 1500 block of Melton Road, an employee of Outside Unlimited Inc. in the 4100 block of St. Paul Road in Hampstead, stepped onto the machine about 4:30 p.m. while it was it was backing up. He then stepped off and fell between the two left wheels.

Police said the operator, whose name was not released, was looking to the rear at the time and never saw Miranda step off the machine, which rode over and crushed him.

State police and the Maryland Occupational Safety and Health agency are investigating the accident.
