Roch Around The Clock

The Kickoff

July 19, 2006|By ROCH KUBATKO

The subject hit Javy Lopez like a 99 mph fastball to the batting helmet.

Not the back. Not again.

Yes, the back.

Lopez came out of the trainers' room yesterday and was met by a small group of reporters standing near the clubhouse entrance.

OK, we were blocking it, but strictly by accident.

"I hate to talk about my back again," he said, smiling. "It's like the third time in two months."

Lower-back stiffness kept Lopez out of the lineup again last night. He said it feels much better and he should be ready for Rodrigo Lopez's next start.

Lopez conceded that the timing isn't good with the non-waiver trade deadline approaching. But either way, he'd rather not be "constantly in pain."

"But it's nothing serious," he said. "I should be fine."
