County recognized for purchasing work

The National Institute of Governmental Purchasing has named Howard County a winner of its Outstanding Agency Accreditation Achievement Award.

The award recognizes agencies that have established standards for a reliable, solid procurement operation.

The application, designed as a self-evaluation, requires documentation and demonstration of the adoption of best practices set by the national institute. Guidelines for automation, accountability, policies and procedures must be met.

The institute is an international, not-for-profit educational and technical association of public purchasing agencies; 2,600 governmental agencies in the United States and Canada are represented.

Only 93 local governments have received the award, according to Howard County Executive James N. Robey.
