Howard County: Jessup

One teen killed, two hurt in crash

An 18-year-old man from Severn was killed and two other teens were injured when their car ran off the road in Jessup, rolled over and struck a tree Saturday night, Howard County police said yesterday.

The rear passenger, Jay B. Grove of the 7700 block of Twin Oaks Road, died after the 1999 Saturn crossed a double line on Mission Road at about 9 p.m., police said.

The driver, Timothy W. Alcott, 18, of the 8300 block of Wades Way in Jessup, and the front passenger, Jonathan A. Morris, 18, of the 16000 block of Jerald Road in Laurel, were taken to Maryland Shock Trauma Center, police said. They were released yesterday morning, Donna Alcott, the driver's mother, said. The three were friends who attended the same church in Laurel, she said.

The accident was under investigation yesterday.

Anne Arundel: Severn River

Body of missing 16-year-old found

The body of a 16-year-old boy was recovered yesterday afternoon from the Severn River near Herald Harbor, where he apparently drowned after taking a dip with companions from a motorboat Saturday evening, a Maryland Natural Resources Police spokesman said.

The body of Luis Vargas was found at about 1 p.m. in 17-foot-deep water and an Anne Arundel County Fire Department dive team recovered it moments later, said Sgt. Wayne Avery, the police spokesman. The body was taken to the state medical examiner's office in Baltimore for an autopsy.

Police said Vargas - a resident of the Annapolis area - had gone fishing with his father, an uncle and two of his father's co-workers when they stopped on the way back near Herald Harbor to go swimming. About 6:30 p.m., the adults noticed the boy was missing and called police.
