At D.C.'s first Fringe Festival, unexpected thrills could be lurking in theater, dance and sideshows

THINK OF THE INAUGURAL Capital Fringe Festival as the theatrical equivalent of the Bargain Basement at Filene's. On any given night, an exquisitely tailored, well-designed play might be scheduled alongside a cut-rate piece of questionable taste.

Both performances will be cheap. And the hunt for a spectacular find is part of the thrill.
