Parent-Child Book Club to meet Tuesday at library

The east Columbia library, 6600 Cradlerock Way, will hold a meeting of its Parent-Child Book Club for those ages 11 to 14, with a parent, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

The group will discuss Mr. Chickee's Funny Money by Christopher Paul Curtis.

Registration is not required.

The library will sponsor a "Mystery Book-Nic," a chance to enjoy a mystery and a picnic lunch for children ages 6 to 8, at noon Aug. 2.

La Leche League to meet Tuesday

The La Leche League of Columbia PM, a support group for breastfeeding mothers, will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Christ Episcopal Church, 6800 Oakland Mills Road.

The topic will be nutrition and weaning. Pregnant mothers, as well as infants and toddlers, are welcome. The group offers information, guidance and support; group leaders are available to answer questions via phone.

Around Town

Free concerts -- Free Monday night concerts at Lake Elkhorn have begun. The Dixie Power Trio will play New Orleans jazz tomorrow and Walt Michael will entertain with American music and its roots July 24. A performance by the Kinderman is scheduled for July 31. The concerts are held at the band shell (the red gazebo) at the spillway. In case of inclement weather, the shows will be held in the pavilion at the lake. 410-730-4610.

Free ice cream -- The Howard County Farmer's Market in Oakland Mills Village Center will hold free ice-cream days Aug. 15 and Sept. 12. Bridge, Mah Jong -- A drop-in bridge program is being offered from noon to 3 p.m. Tuesdays at the 50+ Center at the east Columbia library. A 30-minute lecture is included. Players at all levels are welcome to refresh skills, learn bridge conventions and meet friends. Mentoring is available. The cost is $6. Lessons in Mah Jong are offered at the 50+ Center. Stamping -- Oakland Mills Community Association will present "Stamping with Gina," a workshop on creating greeting cards with a professional look, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at The Other Barn in Oakland Mills Village Center, 5851 Robert Oliver Place. Market tales -- The east Columbia library, 6600 Cradlerock Way, is offering "Market Tales," a program of stories with summer themes, songs and a craft for children to age 5 (children to age 3 must be accompanied by an adult) at 10:30 a.m. and at 2:30 p.m. Thursdays, through Aug. 31. The program will be held while the farm market is on the library parking lot. Tickets will be distributed at the children's desk a half-hour before each event. CPR classes -- The Columbia Teen Center at The Barn, 5851 Robert Oliver Place, will offer the Heartsaver adult/infant/child cardiopulmonary resuscitation class for teenagers from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 22.
