MEET THE BAND

Gatsby Gets the Green Light

July 13, 2006|By SAM SESSA

Hometown -- Westminster

Current members --Rory Pettingill, vocals; Trevor Simpson, guitar and vocals; Andrew Cohen, bass and vocals; Matt Galler, drums

Founded in --2005

Style --pop rock

Influenced by --the Mars Volta, the Academy Is, Treos

Notable --While recording their debut EP Choose Your Own Adventure, band members added extra overdubs. To re-create the full sound live, they played tracks off a laptop until it was stolen on a recent tour stop in Nashville. Now, they've downgraded to an iPod but want to keep using the pre-recorded drum tracks and other instrumentation in their shows.

Quotable --Simpson on playing with the iPod: "It definitely has made us on the whole a much tighter musical unit. The benefits way outweigh the drawbacks. It's more for a matter of professionalism and being able to play with a computer. ... I wish we had the money to hire an orchestra or something like that, but until then, we have a computer."

Hear Gatsby Gets the Green Light on Saturday at St. John's Hamilton, 5315 Harford Road. Music starts at 6 p.m. Tickets are $8. Call 410-790-5682 or visit myspace.com/stjohnshamilton. For more information about the band, go to myspace.com/gatsbyrock.
