Howard County police arrested and charged a man with attempted first-degree murder yesterday in the stabbing of an acquaintance during an argument in the victim's home.

Janitors working in the parking lot of The Mall in Columbia found the victim, Leonard Brooks, 26, of Sherman Heights Place, about 3:30 a.m. yesterday. He had walked across the street from his home to the mall, bleeding and asking for help.

Brooks was flown to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore and was listed in critical condition yesterday afternoon.

About 30 minutes later, patrol officers spotted a man with blood on his clothes walking along U.S. 29 in Columbia. The man, whom police identified as Montaque Edward Butler, 28, was stopped, questioned, arrested and charged in the stabbing. Butler does not have a fixed address, police said.
