County disaster drill set for Wednesday

Harford County, with assistance from Cecil County and Aberdeen Proving Ground, will conduct a weapons of mass destruction exercise on Wednesday.

The exercise, the first of this magnitude in the county, will be staged at various locations in Bel Air, Aberdeen and Havre de Grace.

The Cecil County Department of Emergency Services, Cecil County Health Department, Union Hospital and emergency response personnel also will participate during the daylong drill.

"The objective of the exercise is to promote the cooperation and collaboration of a multijurisdictional response to a disaster or incident," said Harford County Emergency Manager Doug Richmond. "The focus of the exercise will be on decision-making, interagency coordination and communications critical to Harford County's response to such emergencies."

The exercise will include a full-scale test of the emergency communications system for Harford County and its towns. Emergency response agencies from Baltimore City and Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll and Howard counties and the city of Annapolis will demonstrate the integration of communications operations.

Several other community agencies and organizations also will participate.

Drill organizers will strive to keep the public informed before and during the drill through news coverage, fliers and announcements on the Harford Cable Network (Comcast Channel 21 and Clearview Channel 7).

A list of street closures also will be made public in advance of the exercise.
