CHICAGO -- As Jeff Conine's line drive off Chicago White Sox closer Bobby Jenks traveled tantalizingly through the air toward the center-field wall, the Orioles were optimistic that they were about to witness a game-tying, three-run homer.

But the ball bounced off the base of the wall just under the 400-foot mark, meaning only one runner - Melvin Mora, who beat the relay home only because Chicago catcher A.J. Pierzynski couldn't handle the throw - scored and the Orioles trailed by two runs.
