John Paul Jones Day
Celebrate the life of naval hero John Paul Jones Saturday at the Naval Academy's Armel-Leftwich Visitor Center in Annapolis. Jones, a naval captain during the American Revolution, was famous for saying, "I have not yet begun to fight" in response to a British commander's request for surrender.
John Paul Jones Day will include walking tours of the academy and its Jones sites, a lecture on the naval leader, fife and drum demonstrations, cannon loadings, a living-history presentation by John Wilson (who will portray Jones) and a march with the Fifes and Drums of Prince William III to Jones' crypt for a wreath-laying. There also will be a raising of the colors on Jones' ship the Bon Homme Richard, along with fife and drum music. Children can enjoy a scavenger hunt, learn to tie knots, make a paper naval hat and take part in various other activities.
The event runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Armel-Leftwich Visitor Center, U.S. Naval Academy, 52 King George St., Annapolis. Events are free. Tours are $8; $7 seniors; $6 students; free for preschool children. Call 410-263-6933 or visit www .navyonline.com.
