Teen drowns in reservoir

July 03, 2006

A 17-year-old boy apparently drowned last night in Loch Raven Reservoir as a friend and bystanders tried to save him, a Baltimore County Fire Department spokeswoman said.

The teen, whose name was not released, was in the water before 8 p.m. with a female friend about 200 feet from the shore near Morgan Mill Road in an area known as "The Pines." He slipped off an underwater ledge of rock connecting a small island to the shore, said spokeswoman Elise Armacost.

"He called to his friend to help him because he couldn't swim, but he was just pulling her under," Armacost said.

A man who was fishing and a female onlooker attempted to help, she said.

His body was recovered about 40 minutes later.
