Democratic Club to hold candidate forum July 12

The Columbia Democratic Club will hold a candidate forum at 8 p.m. July 12 at the Jeffers Hill Neighborhood Center, 6030 Tamar Drive.

Candidates running for positions on the Howard County Democratic Central Committee will present their views and answer questions.

Free ice cream at farm market

The Howard County Farmer's Market in Oakland Mills Village Center will hold a free ice-cream day, sponsored by Columbia Bank, on July 11.

The market, which is open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays, carries vegetables, fruits, flowers and fresh baked goods. Sweet corn and peaches will be available, starting July 11. Future ice-cream days are planned for Aug. 15 and Sept. 12. There will be no market Tuesday.

The market is held on the parking lot of Oakland Mills Village Center, on Robert Oliver Place.

La Leche group to meet July 18

La Leche League of Columbia PM, a support group for breastfeeding mothers, will meet at 7 p.m. July 18 at Christ Episcopal Church, 6800 Oakland Mills Road.

The topic will be nutrition and weaning.

Pregnant mothers, as well as infants and toddlers, are welcome. The group offers information, guidance and support; group leaders are available to answer questions via phone.

About Long Reach -- Long Reach village will be featured this month on the Columbia Association's television show, Columbia Matters. The show is the fifth in a bimonthly series highlighting the features, history and people of Columbia's 10 villages. Host Barbara Kellner's guests will be village board members Karen Hitcho and Nina Basu. The show also will feature a discussion on governance changes with Tom O'Connor and Patrick von Schlag of the association's board. Bridge -- A drop-in bridge program is being offered from noon to 3 p.m. Tuesdays at the 50+ Center at the east Columbia library. A 30-minute lecture is included. At Long Reach -- Long Reach Community Association is offering "Top Dogg" martial arts classes through Aug. 1. A class for tots is offered from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays; a class for children ages 7 and older and adults is to be held from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. The cost for the eight-week class is $169. Cardio-kickboxing for ages 16 and older is offered from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. The cost is $189 ($220 for couples). A 5 percent discount is available for those living on Columbia Association-assessed property.

The association is offering "Stepping Out," a class in positive styles, attitudes, behaviors, manners and self-confidence, for boys and girls ages 8 to 13, from 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays, through July 22, at Stonehouse in Long Reach Village Center. The cost is $150. 410-730-8113.

Market tales -- The east Columbia library, 6600 Cradlerock Way, is offering "Market Tales," a program of stories with summer themes, songs and a craft for children to age 5 (children to age 3 must be accompanied by an adult) at 10:30 a.m. and at 2:30 p.m. Thursdays, through Aug. 31. The program will be held while the farmers' market is in the library parking lot. Tickets will be distributed at the children's desk a half-hour before each event. 410-313-7730.

Free concerts -- Free Monday night concerts at Lake Elkhorn are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. July 10. Slim Harrison & Sunny land Music will perform. The Dixie Power Trio will play New Orleans jazz July 17, and Walt Michael will entertain with American music and its roots July 24. A performance by the Kinderman is scheduled for July 31. The concerts will be held at the band shell (the red gazebo) at the spillway. In case of inclement weather, the shows will be held in the pavilion at the lake. CPR classes -- The Columbia Teen Center, at The Barn, 5851 Robert Oliver Place, will offer the Heartsaver adult/infant/child cardiopulmonary resuscitation class, for teenagers from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 22. Parents are also welcome to enroll. The American Heart Association class in life-saving techniques costs $60 for Columbia residents; $72 for nonresidents.
