Sewer overflows foul waterways

June 29, 2006

Heavy rain has been blamed for sewer overflows, causing health concerns for waterways in Anne Arundel County and Baltimore.

About 10,000 gallons of partially treated wastewater escaped from the Mayo Wastewater Treatment Plant, off Central Avenue, and the Anne Arundel County Health Department closed and warned against skin contact with the waters of Bear Neck and Whitemarsh creeks.

In Baltimore, a sanitary sewer overflow in the 2800 block of N. Dukeland St., was spilling about 500 gallons a minute yesterday afternoon when the problem was discovered.

Maintenance crews were dispatched, the city Department of Public Works said.
