HCC to oversee technology grant

Howard Community College will serve as the lead institution for a three-year Technology Assessment Program (TAP) grant of $599,491.

The program's goal is to expand the infrastructure for innovation in the Baltimore-Washington corridor; it includes an effort to speed technology-transfer from researchers to the private sector.

The college is developing a course, "Technology Transfer from Invention to Marketplace," to be offered in the fall through its entrepreneurship program. The goal is to teach prospective entrepreneurs to guide innovations from government-funded research laboratories into the marketplace.

The course will provide an opportunity for small teams of students to conduct market analyses of inventions developed by participating laboratories, prepare written technology-assessment reports and present their findings to entrepreneurs, technology transfer specialists and venture capitalists.

The course, which has no prerequisites, is designed for high school and college students, as well as continuing-education students.

Partners in the grant, which is being awarded by the Partnerships for Innovation of the National Science Foundation, are the Howard County Economic Development Authority, Howard County school system, Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory, Goddard Space Flight Center and Naval Research Laboratory.

Bistro expands, opens wine bar

Mary and Joe Barbera, proprietors of AIDA Bistro in Columbia, are celebrating the restaurant's fourth anniversary with the expansion of its main dining room and the opening of a remodeled wine bar.

The restaurant has been named one of the 50 best restaurants in the Baltimore area by Baltimore magazine and voted "Best Italian Restaurant in Howard County" by readers of Columbia Magazine.

Chamber to offer sales session July 12

The Baltimore/Washington Corridor Chamber of Commerce will offer a session of "TIPS: Techniques & Ideas for Professional Salespeople," a monthly motivational meeting, from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. July 12 at corridor offices, 312 Marshall Ave., Suite 104, Laurel.

The topic will be "Creating Sales Ideas." Admission is free to members; $20 for nonmembers.

"Membership 101," a free program for area business professionals, will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. July 13 at the same location.

A Power Networking Breakfast is planned from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. July 18 at the BWI Airport Marriott, 1743 West Nursery Road, Linthicum. The cost is $20 in advance for members; $30 for nonmembers and at the door.
