7th farmers' market to open in county

A new farmers' market will open in South River Colony next month, bringing the total number of markets in Anne Arundel County to seven.

The new market, on Main Street at routes 2 and 214, will open July 6 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. and be open every Thursday until Sept. 28.

County Executive Janet S. Owens will be on hand July 13 to celebrate the opening, along with state Secretary of Agriculture Lewis R. Riley, at 2:30 p.m.

Agricultural exhibits will be on display, and there will be live music.

Owens, who was raised on a South County farm and is running for state comptroller, has been a longtime supporter of farmers' markets across the county. She has also sought to maintain thousands of acres of county farmland.

"These markets are critical to preserving agriculture in Anne Arundel County," she said in a statement.

Statewide, farmers' markets are a source of fruit and vegetables for low-income young families and the elderly who can use vouchers provided by the state Agriculture Department.

"Buying from an Anne Arundel County farmers' market gives you the freshest food available," Lisa Barge, Anne Arundel Economic Development Corp.'s agricultural marketing and development manager, said in a statement. All proceeds from market sales go to the farmer.

The Glen Burnie Town Center Farmers' Market also opens next month, as does the Deale Farmers' Market.
