Cornell, Luella Elizabeth Bivens "Lu Beth"

On Saturday, June 24, 2006, LU BETH, 71, entered life everlasting after multiple complications from Alzheimer's, in Lutherville. She was born on March 12, 1935, in Hagerstown, MD, early childhood in Hancock, graduated from Boonsboro High School, where her father was principal, in 1953; graduated with a bachelor's in 1957 from Towson University followed by a M. Ed. in the first Master's class, 1962. Lu Beth taught 30 years in the Baltimore County Public Schools while serving more than a decade as principal at Mars Estates, Shady Spring and Carney elementary schools after three years as the assistant principal at Timonium and Lutherville. After retirement, Lu Beth continued to sing in the choir at Ascension Evangelical Lutheran, served as an assistant minister, volunteered with the Baltimore Symphony Associates and served on its executive board, volunteered with the Asian Arts & Culture Center at Towson University and served on its Advisory Board, read voraciously and played the piano flawlessly, in addition to being a member of the Baltimore County Genealogical Society, the Historical Society of Baltimore County and the Historical Society of Calvert County. She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Evart F. Cornell, whom she married in 1957. Lu Beth is survived by two children, Jonathan M. Cornell and Sara E. Hall; five grandchildren, Matthew, Rachel, Emma, Jonathan, Jr. and Justice. Also surviving is a brother, Douglas M. Bivens, Jr. Ph.D., of Calvert County, three nephews and three great nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Douglas M. Bivens and Luella Elizabeth Dowell; her paternal grandparents, the Rev. Harvey Luther Bivens and Anna Barbara Wagner; her maternal grandparents, Henry Drury Dowell, Jr. and Mary Elizabeth Gover, of Calvert and Anne Arundel Counties and many beloved cousins across this great Nation. The Service to celebrate Lu Beth's life will be held at the Ascension Evangelical Lutheran Church, 7601 York Road, Towson, MD, on Wednesday at 10:30 A.M. In lieu of flowers, the family requests making a donation to the choir at the Ascension Evangelical Church, the Baltimore Symphony Associates' Elder Spark Initiative c/o the BSA, 1212 Cathedral Street, Baltimore, MD 21201, the Asian Arts & Culture Center at Towson University, Towson, MD 21252-001 or The Heart Homes of Lutherville Program Fund, 1420 Front Avenue, 21093. Inurnment will be in Ascension's Columbarium and will be private. Arrangements by the family owned Mitchell-Wiedefeld Funeral Home, Inc.
