CENTRAL

`Fiesta' Bible school starts tomorrow

Westminster United Methodist Church will hold vacation Bible school from 6 p.m. to 8:35 p.m. tomorrow through Friday at East Main and Center streets. The theme is "Fiesta."

Walk-in registration will be held from 5:45 p.m. to 6 p.m. tomorrow only. The cost is $7 for one child, $14 for two children and $15 for a family of three or more.

Children from age 3 (potty trained) through fifth grade are welcome. Volunteers are needed and childcare for younger children of volunteers is available.

Westminster Senior Center plans events

The Westminster Senior Center, 125 Stoner Ave., has announced activities.

An ice cream social will be held at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday in the dining room. Lunch reservations are required.

An Independence Day Celebration will be held July 5 with a picnic at 11:30 a.m. The Goldenaires will play music of the big band era at 12:30 p.m. Lunch reservations are required by Wednesday.

Planned classes include a writer's workshop, $20 for 10 hours; basic principles of photography, $20 for 12 hours; and genealogy, $79 for 7.5 hours. Registration is at the center.

Trinity seeks crafts, antiques vendors

Trinity Lutheran Church of Smallwood is seeking antiques and crafts vendors for its annual Dutch Picnic Festival Antique & Craft Alley, to be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 5 at the church, 833 Deer Park Road. Space reservations are $15.

Transit talk scheduled at center

The Taneytown Senior Center will present Sandy Sipes in a talk about the Carroll Area Transit System and its services at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.

`Trading Places' Bible school

Mayberry First Church of God will hold vacation Bible school from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. July 10-14 at 2428 Mayberry Road off Route 140.

The theme is "Trading Places."

Children age 3 years and older are welcome. Closing exercises will be held at 7:45 p.m. July 14.

Resident completes basic Navy training

Navy Seaman Robert G. Frain recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

He is the son of Kathleen S. and Lewis F. Frain of Taneytown.

Frain is a 1994 graduate of St. Paul's School of Brooklandville and a 1999 graduate of Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland.

Local author's book available at museum

The Taneytown History Museum has The Carroll County Maryland Baseball, Men's Amateur and Semi-Pro Baseball from 1850-1999 by local author Daniel D. Hartzler.

The book is a collection of interviews and pictures of the history of baseball in Carroll County.

Hartzler has written other books and was a member of the New Windsor Baseball in his youth.

The book is $46.

Pastor Rock retires from Trinity United

Trinity United Church of Christ of Manchester will celebrate the ministry and retirement of Pastor Robert R. Rock at a 3 p.m. worship service and reception today at 3229 York St.

The service will include a pre-worship concert, choral music by the senior and children's choirs and presentations by members of the congregation, association and conference of the United Church of Christ.

Rock has spent the last 10 years of his 38-year ministry at Trinity. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Guilford College and a bachelor's of divinity from Hartford Seminary. He served churches in Massachusetts before coming to Maryland.

Charlotte's Quest holds outdoor class

Charlotte's Quest Nature Center, 3400 Wilhelm Lane, Manchester, will hold an Outdoor Classroom for ages 5 to 9 from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. July 7.

Children can learn about nature and natural science. The cost is $2 for members and $3 for nonmembers.

Senior center holds drawing classes

The North Carroll Senior Center, 2255 Hanover Pike, Greenmount, will hold Drawing & Painting classes from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. tomorrow.

Cindy Baker will teach all levels of experience. The cost will be $20 for a 10-week session.

The Site Council will meet at 11 a.m. tomorrow.

SOUTHWEST

Mount Airy water rates go up in July

Mount Airy has announced an increase in water and sewer rates that was approved after a public hearing in April.

The new rates take effect with next month's water bill. The increase was necessary to adequately address the town's projected system maintenance and capital improvement needs, officials said.

An example of the rate increase for a household using 12,000 gallons shows a water bill of $10.10 and sewer bill of $38.50 going up to $35.38 and $45.20, respectively.

Winfield fire department carnival

Winfield Community Volunteer Fire Department is selling advance reduced ride tickets for its annual carnival, to be held July 10-15 next to the firehouse at 1320 W. Old Liberty Road.
