Program will discuss internal parasites

Maryland Cooperative Extension will hold an Internal Parasite Workshop from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. July 6 at the Frederick County Extension office for producers of sheep and goats.

Internal parasites (gastro-intestinal worms) are the number one health problem affecting sheep and goats in the mid-Atlantic area. Because the worms have become resistant to many of the dewormers being used, a more integrated approach to parasite control is needed.

Susan Schoenian, area agent and sheep and goat specialist at the Western Maryland Research & Education Center, will teach the basics of internal parasites and their control, proper use of dewormers and how to check for the parasites to determine the need for deworming.

The cost is $25 per farm or family and includes a laminated FAMACHA Eye Anemia Guide and reference materials.

Information: 301-631-3577, ext. 13577.

One-Day WIC Farmers' Market set

The Carroll County Health Department Women, Infants, and Children program, in cooperation with the Carroll County Department of Economic Development, will hold its third annual One-Day WIC Farmers' Market on July 10.

Fruit and vegetable growers that participate in WIC-approved markets throughout Maryland are encouraged to participate in this event. The market will be held from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the parking lot behind the health department at 290 S. Center St., Westminster.

The market will coincide with the distribution of WIC coupon checks for the Farmers' Market Nutrition program.

Open to the public, the market will accept coupon checks from both the WIC program and the Senior Farmers' Market Nutrition program.

The market allows WIC participants a chance to become familiar with the farmers selling their goods, the concept of the WIC nutrition services and to increase the redemption rates for WIC coupons distributed in Carroll County.

Farmers interested in being a vendor at the One-Day WIC Farmers' Market can call Gabe Zepp, agriculture development specialist, at 410-386-2070.

Farmers' market directory available

The Carroll County, Maryland Farmers' Markets Directory 2006 is available through the Carroll County Visitor Center in Westminster, Carroll County library branches, or online at www.carrollag.org.

Directory listings include the three public farmers' markets and 13 private farm markets located throughout the county.
