SIERRA LEONE SERENADE

The Refugee All-Stars of Sierra Leone, a six-musician group, came together at the Kalia Refugee Camp in Sierra Leone, on the border of Guinea. When rebel forces attacked Freetown, Sierra Leone's capital, thousands of civilians were forced to flee. The group will perform a free outdoor concert of original songs written in exile Sunday at the Kennedy Center in Washington. After the concert there will be a free screening of the documentary The Refugee All-Stars, which chronicles a three-year period in which the band left the refugee camp to go back to Sierra Leone. After the screening there will be a panel discussion with members of the band and the film's director.

HAIR-CARE HISTORY

Go to Hair-itage: A Journey Through Time Sunday to learn some history of African-American hair care. The exhibit will include photographer Michael Cunningham's portraits of black women and their hair as well as unique hair-care artifacts. A cast-iron stove from 1892, antique pressing combs and crimpers and vintage tins of hair-care products will be on display.

CHAMBER MUSIC

The University of Maryland School of Music's National Orchestral Institute will offer two free performances tomorrow at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center in College Park. Watch Eri Klas, the artistic director of the Tallinn Philharmonic in Estonia, lead the NOI orchestra in an open rehearsal in the morning. At night, mixed NOI ensembles will give a free concert of chamber music.

Scythian, a group of 20-year-olds, turned street-corner performance into a full-time gig. Take the whole family to hear their traditional folk and rockin' Celtic music Wednesday at the Music Center at Strathmore. The band uses guitar, fiddle, harmonica, mandolin, accordion, drums and percussion to build their sound.
