Mets update

The Mets, the hottest team in the majors, beat the Philadelphia Phillies, 5-4, yesterday, securing their eighth straight victory. They lead the National League East by 9 1/2 games. New York has scored in the first inning in eight consecutive games, a team record, and has 84 runs over its past 11 contests. Star third baseman David Wright has homered in three straight games and first baseman Carlos Delgado has nine hits in his past 15 at-bats. The Mets lead the majors with 72 stolen bases, 10 more than the second-place Orioles. Despite being ravaged by injuries, the Mets entered yesterday with the second-best ERA in the majors (3.83). Soler pitched a two-hit shutout in his last outing.
