Patuxent Research Refuge focuses on birds this week

The Patuxent Research Refuge will offer a bird tour for ages 16 and older from 8:15 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Tuesday at the North Tract, Route 198 between the Baltimore-Washington Parkway and Route 32, near Laurel. Participants will identify birds in several refuge habitats on the guided tour. Field guides and binoculars are recommended.

A bird walk for all ages is planned from 8:15 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday. Field guides and binoculars are recommended.

An owl prowl for all ages is planned from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Saturday. Participants will look and listen for owls, frogs and other nocturnal animals on the guided walk.

The programs are free, but reservations are required. Special needs can be accommodated.

Movie, garden tips at Savage library

The Savage library branch, 9525 Durness Lane, will show the movie Raiders of the Lost Ark at 7 p.m. June 28. Registration begins Wednesday.

"Ask a Master Gardener," a drop-in program for those with questions about gardening or problem plants is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon June 24 at the library. Take a sample of the plant in question.

"To Dye For," a chance to create a tie-dyed garment or other items, will be held at the library from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. June 24. Bring up to five white or light cotton T-shirts or pillow cases, and wear old clothes and shoes.

Military

Graduates -- Air Force Senior Airman James C. Kundert, son of Bette L. Kundert of Laurel and brother of Carol L. Parker of Mount Airy, has graduated from Airman Leadership School at Shaw Air Force Base, Sumter, S.C. The school is the first of three levels of professional military education to develop leadership and supervisory skills, and is required for promotion to the rank of staff sergeant. Kundert, a satellite and wideband communications maintenance apprentice with three years of military service, is assigned to the 338th Training Squadron, Fort Gordon, Ga.

Summer classes -- The South Laurel Recreation Council is accepting registration for summer classes for children, teens, adults and families. Classes, which will be held at Montpelier, Oaklands and James Harrison elementary schools and at the Montpelier Carriage House and neighborhood park, begin tomorrow. Registration is required. Fitness classes include yoga, tai chi and tennis. Arts and crafts classes are to be offered for children. Classes for youth and adults include counted cross stitch, scrap-booking and self-defense. Writer's Circle -- The Savage library branch, 9525 Durness Lane, will hold a meeting of its Writer's Circle at 7 p.m. tomorrow. Those who attend can share original writing with other aspiring authors and share comments and support. Registration is required. 410-880-5980.
