ISSUE: -- A champion for the McDonald's LPGA Championship will be crowned at Bulle Rock golf course in Havre de Grace today. Will the big winner be: Annika Sorenstam? Michelle Wie? The local economy? The county's reputation as a suitable host for major events?

Annika Sorenstam is a better bet

I would put my money on Annika Sorenstam. As far as Michelle Wie goes, I wish she'd stop trying to play with the men when she hasn't won on the LPGA tour and didn't have a stellar junior record. She thinks she's too good for the women.

Tournament is sign of county's maturity

Capturing a five-year commitment from the LPGA is yet another sign of Harford County's continuing march to maturity. This region has rapidly enhanced its reputation as a focal point for research, academia, recreation and technology. May we all have the wisdom to ensure that this growth is tempered and controlled. When that happens, everyone wins - especially the families that generate the vigorous spirit and vitality of our local communities.
