Series of candidates forums scheduled in Oakland Mills

The Association of Community Services will hold a series of pre-primary candidates forums from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Wednesday, and June 28 and July 12 at the Oakland Mills Interfaith Center, 5885 Robert Oliver Place.

Candidates for county executive and County Council will speak and answer questions Wednesday; candidates for the Howard County state delegation will be available June 28; and candidates for the Howard County school board will be on hand July 12.

The Association of Community Services is a network of 150 nonprofit, for-profit and government agencies and individuals that works to advance human services in the county.

School board candidates forum

The Columbia Democratic Club will sponsor a candidates forum for the Howard County school board at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Jeffers Hill Neighborhood Center, 6030 Tamar Drive.

Candidates will present their views and answer questions.

Free concerts set at Lake Elkhorn

Free Monday night concerts at Lake Elkhorn will begin at 7 p.m. July 10, when Slim Harrison & Sunnyland Music will perform.

The Dixie Power Trio will play New Orleans jazz July 17, and Walt Michael will entertain with American music and its roots July 24.

A performance by the Kinderman is scheduled for July 31.

The concerts will be held at the band shell (the red gazebo) at the spillway. In case of inclement weather, the shows will be held in the pavilion at the lake.

The concerts are sponsored by the Kings Contrivance, Long Reach, Oakland Mills and Owen Brown community associations.

Military

Graduates -- Air Force Airman Nathaniel C. Manzoli, son of Dennis Manzoli of Long Reach and Laurel Laux of Parkton, has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. He is a 2005 graduate of Howard High School.

Completes training -- Navy Seaman Apprentice Emma L. Rector, a 2000 graduate of Long Reach High School, completed Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

Around Town

Bridge -- A drop-in bridge program is being offered from noon to 3 p.m. Tuesdays at the 50+ Center at the East Columbia Library. A 30-minute lecture is included. Players of all levels are welcome to refresh skills, learn bridge conventions and meet friends. Mentoring is available. The cost is $6. 410- 290-5430.

At Long Reach -- The Long Reach Community Association is offering "Top Dogg" martial arts classes through Aug. 1. A class for tots is offered from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays; a class for children ages 7 and older and adults is to be held from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. The cost for the eight-week class is $169. Cardio kick boxing for ages 16 and older is offered from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. The cost is $189; $220 for couples. A 5 percent discount is available for those living on Columbia Association-assessed property.

The association is offering "Stepping Out," a class in positive styles, attitudes, behaviors, manners and self-confidence, for boys and girls ages 8 to 13, from 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays, through July 22, at Stonehouse in Long Reach Village Center. The cost is $150. 410- 730-8113.

Keep your car -- The Oakland Mills Community Policing Office, 5820 Stevens Forest Road, will offer free vehicle-identification etching from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday. A vehicle-identification number will be engraved on all large pieces of glass on each car as a deterrent to theft. Anti-theft devices will be distributed. Participants can also register for the "Watch Your Car Program." The event is sponsored by the Maryland/DC Anti-Car Theft Committee and the Howard County Police Department. 410-313-3337.
