Avocado oils from Olivado

go try it

June 10, 2006|By KATE SHATZKIN | KATE SHATZKIN,SUN REPORTER

What it is -- One of a new line of avocado oils from Olivado Gourmet Foods

What we like about it --Avo cado oil has a neutral flavor and a higher "smoke point" (the tempera ture at which an oil starts to disinte grate) than other oils, making it a versatile choice for deep-frying and baking, as well as drizzling on vege tables and bread. It hasn't been widely available, but the Olivado, a New Zealand company, is trying to change that with a line of un adorned and flavor-infused avocado oils. This plain version performed much like extra-virgin olive oil; it was good for searing fish and light enough to make a nice vinai grette.

What it costs --$12.99 for a 250-milliliter bottle

Where to buy it --Acme Mar kets, Whole Foods and olivado.com
