PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Kyle Cottrell

Glenelg

A four-year starting defenseman for the Gladiators, Cottrell anchored a unit that yielded only 5.36 goals per game. Cottrell was assigned the top attackman from the opposing team and worked as an effective shutdown defender.

Cottrell helped to stabilize the defense in front of a sophomore goalie who was in his first varsity season. He will study finance and play lacrosse at Loyola College.

COACH OF THE YEAR

Joshua Hatmaker

Glenelg

The preseason front-runners for the Howard County title looked to be Mount Hebron and River Hill, and the Gladiators' season-opening loss to South Carroll did little to change anyone's mind -- except that of Hatmaker.

With high-scoring sophomore Chris Gotschall and shot-stopping sophomore keeper Jon Selfridge being central to their success, the Gladiators won 12 straight games and the county title before losing to eventual state champ Mount Hebron in the Class 3A-2A regional semifinals. South Carroll was the only team to score in double figures against Glenelg.
