Cancer Coalition to hold meeting

The Howard County Cancer Coalition will hold its annual Partnership Meeting today at the offices of the Howard County Health Department, 7178 Columbia Gateway Drive, Columbia.

Dr. Jeanette Linder, radiation oncologist and assistant professor at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, will speak about "Cancer: It's a Family Disease."

Dr. Penny Borenstein, Health Officer at the Howard County Health Department, will speak about "The Local Perspective."

Local and state cancer program updates and exhibits are planned. New coalition officers will be elected, and refreshments will be served.

Juneteenth event planned for Sunday

The Howard County Center of African American Culture will hold its annual Juneteenth Celebration, a nationally celebrated commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States, at 3 p.m. Sunday at the center, 5434 Vantage Point Road, Columbia.

Admission to the family program is free. Light refreshments will be served.

County Tourism to hold fundraiser

Howard County Tourism will hold its annual fundraiser, "A Moonlight Garden Soiree," from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at the Belmont Conference Center, 6555 Belmont Woods Road, Elkridge.

Tickets are $65 at the door and include a free $25 gift certificate for the Elkridge Furnace Inn.

More than 100 auction items (including resort vacations), food provided by 20 local restaurants, and wine, beer and soft drinks are planned.

CA board seeking applicants for panel

The Columbia Association's board of directors is seeking applicants to fill three vacancies on the Environmental Matters Committee, a subcommittee of the association's Open Space Committee. Members of the subcommittee will advise the Open Space Committee and the board on environmental issues, interests, opportunities and concerns related to Columbia's open space.

Applicants, who must live on Columbia Association-assessed property, should have a background in the areas of natural resource management or policy, or parks, grounds or outdoor recreation planning and management.

Columbia's 39th to be celebrated

Columbia's 39th birthday celebration will be held Friday at the Columbia Lakefront as part of the Columbia Festival of the Arts LakeFest.

A cake-cutting ceremony with Columbia Association President Maggie Brown and the Columbia board of directors is planned at 7:30 p.m. Everyone is invited to join in singing "Happy Birthday."

Vendors sought for 50+ Expo

Vendors are being sought for the 50+ Expo, to be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 20 at Wilde Lake High School in Columbia.

Fees vary and are based on exhibitor category and location at the expo, which is designed for people age 50 and older and their families, caregivers and friends. The expo will feature a health fair, health screenings, an alternative care fair, an "Ask the Experts" series, workshops, demonstrations, an auction, entertainment and food.

Sessions to focus on seniors' needs

The Columbia Association's Senior Advisory Committee will organize focus groups to discuss the needs of Columbia's older adult community. Participants will be asked about programs and services they would like to have and which of the association's programs and facilities they use most.

The groups are open to people who live or work on Columbia Association-assessed property. Sessions last 1 1/2 hours and are limited to 12 participants.

A session for those ages 66 and older will be held at 7 p.m. July 18 at Owen Brown Community Center, 6800 Cradlerock Way, Columbia; a session for ages 55 to 65 will be held at 10 a.m. June 21 at the same location. Light refreshments will be served.

Conservation board seeks nominations

Nominations are being sought for an appointment to the Howard Soil Conservation District board of supervisors. The appointment will be for a term that expires July 10, 2011.

Any interested individual or organization can submit a recommendation. Supervisors must be residents of the district; district boundaries are the same as county boundaries.

Nominations, which must be received by June 26, should be sent to: State Soil Conservation Committee, Department of Agriculture, 50 Harry S. Truman Parkway, Room 306, Annapolis 21401.

Nomination forms are available through the Maryland Cooperative Extension - Howard County, 3525-L Ellicott Mills Drive, Ellicott City 21043-4561. Forms are also available at the Soil Conservation District Office, 708 Lisbon Center Drive, Suite E, Woodbine.
