PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Andrew Black
Friends
Probably the best player in Friends baseball history, Black capped his four-year varsity career by batting .557 (34-for-61) with 31 RBIs, 30 runs scored, an area-best 10 homers, seven doubles and 16 stolen bases in 17 attempts.
A middle infielder who also pitches, Black was 4-2 with a 1.23 ERA in 46 innings, with 72 strikeouts and 19 walks for the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association B Conference Quakers. For his career, Black, who is headed to Division I Bradley in Peoria, Ill., batted .512 with 29 doubles, 15 triples and 17 homers.
COACH OF THE YEAR
Marty Meloy
Gilman
Meloy guided the Greyhounds through a late-season surge that resulted in a surprising finish as the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference runners-up. Gilman started 2-7, but won 12 of its last 17 and nine of the final 12 games to finish 14-12.
The Greyhounds, the fifth seed in the league playoffs, won their first two games in the tournament to advance to the finals for the first time since 1996, the only year they won it. Gilman did not have outstanding pitching and relied on its offense to win in Meloy's 21st season at the school.
