DENVER -- The last time the Bayhawks started a season 1-2, they went on to reach the Major League Lacrosse championship game.

They're going to need the same kind of turnaround this year.

Last night, the expansion Denver Outlaws rolled to a 24-14 victory at Invesco Field, dropping the Bayhawks to 1-2 for the first time since 2001.

Mike Law had four goals - including two two-pointers - and former UMBC star Brendan Mundorf had three goals in his first MLL game for the Outlaws (3-0).

In addition to Law and Mundorf, who was drafted Wednesday, the Outlaws rode the performances of the six former Bayhawks on their roster. Benson Erwin, Brian Langtry, Josh Sims and Jeff Sonke combined for six goals and six assists, Trevor Tierney was named Most Valuable Player for his performance in goal, and defender Lee Zink held Bayhawks attacker Mark Millon without a goal for only the third time in Millon's six-year career.

"We have to win games," said Bayhawks attacker Tom Marechek, who discounted any incentive to beat former teammates. "I don't care who we're playing against. We have to win these games."

Coming off a win last week against Chicago, the Bayhawks quickly jumped ahead when Jude Collins scored 24 seconds into the game.

The Bayhawks built a 3-0 lead and held a 7-4 advantage with less than three minutes to play in the first half.

But the Outlaws scored four goals in the final 2:08 of the half and the first four points of the second half. At one point, the Bayhawks went 14 minutes, 50 seconds without a goal.

"It was tough, obviously, in the third quarter," said Marechek, who had four goals for his 26th career hat trick. "They were scoring at will and we couldn't stop the bleeding."
