College offering summer courses

Carroll Community College is offering summer classes in several areas.

Available art courses, starting this week, include "Paint with Watercolor and Ink Outdoors," "Drawing for the Timid" and "Botanical Drawing."

A "Technology Course For Teachers" at all levels will be held June 19-30.

A two-week "Photoshop Level I" photography class will be held July 11-27, as well as one-day "Photoshop Level I and II" on July 13 and 20, respectively.

Art on `light side' at Tevis Gallery

The Carroll Arts Center features "On the Light Side: Art That Makes Us Smile," with works ranging from clay monsters to classic pen-and-ink comics. The exhibit opens Thursday and runs through Aug. 5 in the Tevis Gallery at 91 W. Main St., Westminster.

An artists' reception will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Artists and their creations include Ronald Markman using classic comics to make original humorous designs; Elizabeth Morisette using eBay purchases for tongue-in-cheek assemblages; and James and Debbie Hanessian's traditional pen-and-ink drawings.

Also included are ceramic artist Cat Audette and Rich Holt's comical sculptures; Genna Gurvich's teapots; and Amy E. Connor's slightly twisted versions of fairy tale illustrations.

USAF brass group to perform June 19

The U.S. Air Force Heritage Brass Quintet will give a free concert at 7 p.m. June 19 at the Carroll Arts Center, 91 W. Main St., Westminster.

The quintet presents a blend of music spanning more than 350 years, from works by Bach to jazz selections by Duke Ellington to pop music and patriotic pieces.

Made up of two trumpets, horn, trombone and tuba, the quintet is part of the USAF Heritage of America Band based at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia.

Free tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis from the box office or by sending a self-addressed, stamped envelope to CCAC, 91 W. Main St., Westminster 21157. State the number of tickets requested (maximum four).

Handbell ensemble holding auditions

The Westminster Ringers, a handbell ensemble, will hold auditions June 22 and June 29.

The group's goal is to promote the art of handbell ringing through various performances.

Appointments are required for auditions.

Open rings for interested persons will be held Thursday and June 15.

Common Ground plans classes

Common Ground on the Hill will hold its annual Traditions Week I and II of summer classes July 2-7 and July 9-14 at McDaniel College. The Roots Music & Arts Festival, featuring the music of Richie Havens, will be held July 8 and July 9 at the Carroll County Farm Museum.

Classes in art, music, writing, crafts and more are available for all ages. A children's curriculum is available during the first week of the program.

Arts Council readies art camps for kids

The Carroll County Arts Council will hold its summer arts camps for children at the Arts Center, 91 W. Main St., Westminster.

Available camp sessions are:

Arts and Crafts Camp for ages 8 to 12: July 10-14 and July 17-21. The cost is 48 for members and $90 for nonmembers.

Creative Kids Camp for ages 5 to 7: July 24-28 and July 31-Aug. 4. The cost is 48 for members and $90 for nonmembers.

Fun Company Theatre Camp for ages 9 to 13: July 10-21. The cost is $250 for members and $260 for nonmembers.
