Bamboo festival

Bamboo has been used in many an unusual and interesting way throughout history. Learn about the various modern uses for bamboo at the "Wild About Bamboo Festival" this weekend at the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore. The two-day festival will explore the ancient and current uses for the plant. Visitors can take part in a live plant auction by the Northeastern Chapter of the American Bamboo Society, watch demonstrations with the material and see how it's used to create household products such as furniture, umbrellas and wind chimes.

The festival takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the zoo, Druid Hill Park. Free with paid zoo admission, which is $15; $12 for seniors; $10 for those 2-11; free for those younger than 2. Call 410-366-LION or visit www.marylandzoo.org
