BOYS

Sophomore Tyler Hibbs, a right-handed pitcher-third baseman, led the top-ranked Wildcats to a record 10th state championship, 5-3, over C. Milton Wright in the Class 4A final at Ripken Stadium. Hibbs posted an Anne Arundel County single-season-record 13th win by throwing the last four innings of the title game, yielding four hits, two runs, two walks and striking out nine, including the side in the last inning. Hibbs also had two hits, including his 17th double of the season to drive in a run. It was his 22nd career double, a school record.

It took five wins, three in the 4A East regional and two in the state tournament for the Wildcats (23-3) to win it all, and Hibbs won four, the last three in succession. After throwing five scoreless innings of hitless relief with eight strikeouts for a 5-3 win over Chesapeake in the regional final, Hibbs tossed a seven-hitter at Quince Orchard in the state semifinals. Hibbs finished 13-1 with 77 strikeouts in 71 innings and a 1.20 ERA, while batting .424 (42-for-90).

Others considered: Zach Brown, Wilde Lake, track and field; Joe Velleggia, Calvert Hall, baseball; Tom Kuntzman, Loch Raven, lacrosse.
