STATS -- The 6-foot-2, 170-pound junior has excelled during his first season of track by winning the triple jump title in both the Baltimore City and Class 2A North regional meets. Williams, 17, leaped 40 feet, 4 1/4 inches in the city, and 43-4 at regionals.
SIDELINES -- Williams, who has a 3.0 grade point average, was recruited to run track after a basketball season in which he averaged eight points and seven rebounds to help the Engineers reach the 2A North regional quarterfinals. Williams was convinced by track coach Steve Williams (no relation), who said track would aid the athlete's dunking abilities. "He said it would help me to go places, so I'm going to make it a long-term thing," Artavius Williams said.
