Centennial student wins poster contest

Samantha Luo, 16, a 10th-grader at Centennial High School, has won in the poster category of the 12th Fred Benjamin Peace Awards for Maryland High School Students. The topic illustrated by her poster was "Creating A Culture of Peace."

The poster showed two hands clasped in front of a peace sign, surrounded by flags from nine countries.

Samantha received a prize of $200. The awards, which also included prizes for poetry and essays, were presented at the 21st annual Maryland Peace and Justice Conference, held April 29 in Baltimore.

The awards are organized by Maryland United for Peace and Justice -- Institute for Positive Action, a networking organization for groups working for peace, justice and a clean environment.

Democrats schedule a `Meet-Greet' session

The Ellicott City Democratic Club will hold a "Meet and Greet" event for local Democratic candidates at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Miller branch library, 9421 Frederick Road, Ellicott City.

Courtney Watson, who is running for Howard County Council from the 1st District, and Kweisi Mfume, a candidate for the U.S. Senate, will speak and talk with guests.

The event is one of a series planned by the club.

`Adventures Afloat' to be library topic

Elderhostel representatives Ralph and Virginia Adams will talk about "Adventures Afloat," and other life-enriching programs in the United States and abroad, at 2 p.m. June 5 at the Miller branch library.

`National Road' yard sale slated

Emory United Methodist Church, 3799 Church Road, Ellicott City, will join the "Historic National Road Yard Sale" by holding an indoor yard sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and noon to 3 p.m. June 4 at the church.

The yard sale is being held by families and business along the Historic National Road to celebrate the road and encourage people to explore and enjoy it.

The road, which was authorized by Thomas Jefferson in 1806, served as a gateway to the West in the early 19th century. It extends from Baltimore's Inner Harbor through Illinois.
