Free tutoring offered before football

The Columbia Ravens football organization, a Howard County youth football and cheerleading group, is cooperating with Howard County schools to offer free after-school tutoring before football practices from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, beginning Sept. 5.

Free transportation will be available from the children's middle schools to Harper's Choice Middle School, where assistance with homework and tutoring in reading, writing, mathematics and strategies for effective studying will be offered. Howard County teachers will also offer enrichment courses in languages, science and other areas.

The program is open to sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders. Space is limited to 20 children in each grade. Registration is required by June 15.

Information or registration: www.ColumbiaRavens.com.

Reading club to start Thursday at library

The Howard County Library will launch its Summer Reading Club for children Thursday. Participants can register at any of the library's branches, or online at www.hclibrary.org.

This year's theme is "Clue into Reading" and features the library's mascot, Sneaks the Cat.

Each branch will hold a celebration June 10 to kick off the program.

Participants complete a brief entry form for each book they read to be eligible for monthly prize drawings. The program runs from Thursday through Aug. 31.
