Sessions to focus on seniors' needs

Community Notes The Columbia Association's Senior Advisory Committee will organize focus groups to discuss the needs of Columbia's older adult community. Participants will be asked about programs and services they would like to have and which of the association's programs and facilities they use the most.

The groups are open to people who live or work on Columbia Association-assessed property. Sessions last 1 1/2 hours and are limited to 12 participants.

Sessions for those ages 55 to 65 will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Slayton House on Wilde Lake Village Green, and at 10 a.m. June 21 at Owen Brown Community Center, 6800 Cradlerock Way. Sessions for those ages 66 and older will be held at 10 a.m. June 6 at Slayton House, and 7 p.m. July 18 at Owen Brown Community Center.

Success in Style plans open house

Success in Style, a nonprofit organization, will hold an open house from noon to 5 p.m. Thursday at 3290 Pine Orchard Lane, Suite A-2, Ellicott City. The first 50 guests will receive a gift.

The organization provides free business attire and interview coaching to women in need.

Conservation board seeks nominations

Nominations are being sought for an appointment to the Howard Soil Conservation District Board of Supervisors. The appointment will be for a term that expires July 10, 2011.

Any interested individual or organization can submit a recommendation. Supervisors must be residents of the district; district boundaries are the same as county boundaries.

Nominations, which must be received by June 26, should be sent to: State Soil Conservation Committee, Department of Agriculture, 50 Harry S. Truman Parkway, Room 306, Annapolis 21401.

Nomination forms are available through the Maryland Cooperative Extension - Howard County, 3525-L Ellicott Mills Drive, Ellicott City 21043-4561. Forms are also available at the Soil Conservation District Office, 708 Lisbon Center Drive, Suite E, Woodbine.

Nominees should be knowledgeable about and interested in proper land use and the conservation of soil, water and related natural resources.

County offices closed Monday for holiday

Howard County government offices, courts, library branches, animal shelter and landfill will be closed in observance of Memorial Day on Monday. Library branches will also be closed Sunday.

There will be no recycling or trash service Monday. Trash will be collected Tuesday for Monday and Tuesday routes. Recycling for Monday routes will be collected June 5.

Parking meters must have coins, and parking regulations are in effect on Memorial Day.

Fund to help pay for pool fees

In partnership with the Columbia Foundation, the family of the late Ann Scherr, former director of the association's Community Services Division, has established the Ann Scherr fund to offer grants for summer pool memberships for lower-income families.

The grants will help families pay the Columbia Association's reduced rates for lower-income families.

Scherr, who died last year, was committed to ensuring that all residents have access to the Columbia Association facilities and services.
