Shavuot service to be held June 2

The Columbia Jewish Congregation will hold a Shavuot service, with meditation, discussion, poetry and singing, at 8 p.m. June 2 at the Meeting House in Oakland Mills Village Center, 5885 Robert Oliver Place, Columbia.

A wine-and-cheese reception is planned at 7:30 p.m., and an Oneg Shabbat will follow the service and provide an opportunity for mingling and conversation. Questions from prospective members will be answered at that time.

The holiday Shavuot, which begins Thursday evening and ends June 3, commemorates the giving of the Torah to the Jewish people at Mount Sinai. The holiday also commemorates the time when the first fruits were harvested and brought to the Temple.

Church planning yard sale for June 3

Christ United Methodist Church will hold a yard sale from 8 a.m. to noon June 3 at Owen Brown Interfaith Center, 7246 Cradlerock Way, Columbia.

Furniture, kitchen items, books, toys and a large room of clothing will be available. Proceeds will help support the church's outreach programs.

Federation to hold 2nd Women's Event

The Jewish Federation of Howard County will hold its second Women's Event, honoring 10 women for their contributions to Jewish life in Howard County, at 6:30 p.m. June 7 at Temple Isaiah, 12200 Scaggsville Road, Fulton.

Debra Weinberg, who recently completed a mission to the former Soviet Union to advocate for elderly Jews, will speak. She will be introduced by WBAL-TV reporter Deborah Weiner.

A silent auction, raffle and music by Alex Brown are planned. Jewish dietary laws will be observed.

Tickets are $54 to $180. Proceeds will benefit Jewish Family Services and other community programs.

Resale Bazaar set for June 10

Mount Hebron Presbyterian Church, 2330 Mount Hebron Drive, Ellicott City, will hold a Resale Bazaar, with new and nearly new items, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 10.

Free morning coffee will be offered while customers inspect jewelry, household goods and furnishings, decorative items, childrens clothing and toys, electronics, games, books and antiques. A baked-goods sale is also planned.

Early-bird purchasers are discouraged.

2 churches slate `Hymn-fest' June 11

Grace Episcopal and Trinity Episcopal churches in Elkridge will hold a "Hymn-fest" at 3 p.m. June 11 at Trinity Episcopal Church, 7474 Washington Blvd., Elkridge.

The free concert will include choral and instrumental performances. Light refreshments will be served.

`Vision of Jesus' seminar scheduled

Bon Secours Spiritual Center, 1525 Marriottsville Road, Marriottsville, will offer a seminar, "The Vision of Jesus in a Rapidly Changing World," from 5 p.m. June 25 to 4 p.m. June 29.

The Rev. Diarmuid O'Murchu, a priest and social psychologist who has spent his life in social ministry with those who are grieving, ill, homeless or refugees, will lead the seminar.

The cost is $375. Registration is due by June 11.

Christ Church Link offers aid referrals

Christ Church Link, a program of Christ Episcopal Church in Columbia, offers referrals to service agencies in Howard County and Maryland.

Callers can be referred to agencies that help prevent evictions and utility cutoffs, provide food and help with employment and other needs.

Service hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays; 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesdays; and 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursdays.
