SEATTLE -- The ball trickled down the third base line, hitting the infield grass and then veering toward the thick line of chalk. It appeared to roll into foul territory, though only for a brief and hard-to-discern instant, before bounding back and settling comfortably in fair ground.

When there was no hope left, third baseman Melvin Mora picked up Jeremy Reed's bunt as Kris Benson stood stoically a few yards away, staring in disbelief. It would get much worse in the second inning for the Orioles' best and most reliable starter this season.
