A 52-year-old former federal worker who had more than 1 million explicit images stored on his computers pleaded guilty in federal court in Greenbelt yesterday to producing and possessing child pornography.

Captured after he appeared on the television show America's Most Wanted, Robert M. Carey, formerly of Bowie, agreed to a 15-year prison sentence, subject to a judge's approval.

According to a statement of facts, Carey had worked at the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration since 1974.

Carey used government computers at his office and home to access child pornography over the Internet, court papers said. In August 2005, federal law enforcement agents said they searched Carey's NOAA office and home and recovered more than 1 million graphic images of prepubescent girls and girls in their early teens, including one member of his own .

Carey admitted to downloading child pornography for approximately 10 years at work. He was arrested Jan. 24 of this year after surrendering to U.S. officials in Rome.
