Roch around the clock

The Kickoff

May 16, 2006|By ROCH KUBATKO

Catcher Ramon Hernandez said he's not tired and doesn't want a day off. You'll like what he had to say when I asked if manager Sam Perlozzo checks on him to see if he's OK: "Once in a while he'll ask, `How are you feeling?' But it doesn't matter if I'm tired. I'm never going to tell him that I need a day off. I'm never going to say that," Hernandez said.

"I like to play. I like to be out there every day. I will figure out a way to play. If my body's dragging, I'm tired or I can't move, I'll take a little water, a little Powerade, whatever I need to do. A lot of sleep, whatever will make myself be out there, I will do it.

"When you don't play, you don't have a chance to do anything. You never know what you're missing when you don't play. You might go 4-for-4 that day. The day you don't play, that might be your best day ever. I don't want to miss that."

And that, my friends, is a true gamer.
