New Spalding basketball coach leaves

Strickland takes job as N.C. State assistant

Without coaching a game, Pete Strickland has resigned as boys basketball coach at Archbishop Spalding to accept an assistant coaching position at North Carolina State.

"Pete told our principal Mike Murphy [over the weekend] that he is going to formally accept a position on Sidney Lowe's staff at N.C. State," said Lee Dove, Spalding athletic director. "He gave us every indication that he was staying put, but ... "

Strickland, who was fired as Coastal Carolina coach in 2005, was an assistant coach at DeMatha when Lowe played there for Morgan Wootten.

Strickland was hired last month to replace Mike Glick, who resigned at the end of the season and who has been named coach at Gwynn Park in Prince George's County.

Dove said Spalding will go back to some of the finalists to "see if any interest is still there."

In other coaching news, St. Paul's has hired Seth Goldberg, an assistant for Bob Flynn at both Cardinal Gibbons and McDaniel College,as its boys basketball coach. Goldberg moved from Gibbons to McDaniel with Flynn.
