Margaret C. McDonnell, 83, hospice volunteer

Margaret C. McDonnell, a longtime volunteer at a downtown hospice, died of cancer Tuesday at Gilchrist Center for Hospice Care in Towson. The Lutherville resident was 83.

Born Margaret C. Reall in Baltimore and raised in the Walbrook section, she was a 1940 graduate of Forest Park High School.

She was a weekly volunteer at Joseph Richey House. For more than 25 years, she did grocery shopping for patients, families and staff members at the North Eutaw Street hospice - adjacent to Mount Calvary Episcopal Church, where she was a longtime communicant.

A former board member of the Dulaney Valley Improvement Association, she also belonged to the Lutherville Garden Club.

A Mass of Christian burial was offered yesterday at Mount Calvary.

Survivors include her husband of 65 years, John R. McDonnell, a retired dental supplies salesman and original board member of Joseph Richey House; two sons, John F. McDonnell of Phoenix in Baltimore County and Randy T. McDonnell of New Freedom, Pa.; a sister, Bettie Hoyle of Westminster; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
