Teen volunteers needed at library

Teenage volunteers, ages 13 and older, are needed to assist Howard County library staff during the summer with "Clue Into Reading," the library's summer reading program for elementary school-age children.

One-hour orientations will be held at all Howard County Library branches. Volunteers need attend only one session. Service hours are available.

Help is sought staffing hot line

The STTAR Center, a nonprofit organization in Columbia, is seeking weekend volunteers to staff its 24-hour hot line for victims of rape, sexual assault and other violent crimes.

Once trained, volunteers provide telephone crisis counseling and may act as victim advocates at Howard County General Hospital.

Volunteers will have an opportunity to improve counseling skills and learn about sexual assault and abuse and other crimes. They must commit to at least one year of service for at least four weekend shifts each month. Shifts are four to six hours long.

Editing assistance, luncheon aid needed

Volunteers are needed to help edit entries in the Resource Guide, a project of the Department of Citizen Services' Office on Aging. Attention to detail is essential.

Flexible daytime hours are available for the short-term project.

Volunteers are also needed for the Older Americans' Day Luncheon, starting at 10:30 a.m. May 23 at Ten Oaks Ballroom in Clarksville.

Legislative interns sought for 2007

Legacy Leadership Maryland is seeking volunteers, ages 50 and older, to serve as legislative interns during the 2007 legislative session in Annapolis.

Training, provided through the University of Maryland, will be held two days a week for 10 weeks.

The program is designed to involve mature people in the political process. Participants will be assigned to work in the office of a delegate or senator during the 90-day General Assembly session. Intern opportunities with Howard County legislators are also available.

Volunteer center exercise, training

The Volunteer Center Serving Howard County, a member of the Community Emergency Response Network, will be the host for a Volunteer Mobilization Center exercise and training, to be held at 10 a.m. June 3 in the community room of the Clarksville fire hall, at Routes 108 and 32 in Clarksville. Registration is required before May 31.

Volunteer Mobilization Centers are to assist in registering and referring unaffiliated volunteers after a disaster.

The Volunteer Center is also recruiting volunteers for local nonprofit and government agencies needing help with disaster preparedness and recovery. Orientations are scheduled regularly.

Neighbor Ride seeks drivers, coordinators

Neighbor Ride, a nonprofit transportation program, is seeking volunteer drivers and ride coordinators to provide transportation for those ages 60 and older in Howard County. Drivers use their vehicles to take seniors to medical and other appointments, religious services, social events and educational and exercise classes.

An orientation is scheduled from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. June 13 at 8808 Centre Park Drive, Suite 108, Columbia.

Group aiding kids needs mentors

Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Central Maryland, which serves Baltimore and surrounding counties, is seeking volunteers to become mentors, friends and role models for children in need.

Advocates sought for at-risk kids

Voices for Children, a nonprofit organization, is seeking volunteers to be court-appointed advocates and mentors to abused, neglected and at-risk children in Howard County.

Voices for Children is part of the National Court Appointed Special Advocate Association that provides advocates for children involved with the juvenile court system.
