Gupta is selected for finance program

Sagar Gupta, a senior at River Hill High School who attends the Howard County schools' Academy of Finance, one of the career academies, is one of 20 students nationwide to be chosen for the Citigroup Academy of Finance Scholars program.

In addition to the $20,000 scholarship (to be awarded over four years), Gupta, who will attend the University of California, Berkeley this fall as a business and economics major, will receive a paid, renewable summer internship after completing his freshman year at college at a Citigroup business.

Gupta, of Dayton, is president of the Howard County Academy of Finance Student Advisory Board and state president of the Maryland Future Business Leaders of America.

Community council promotes Bogale

Amsale Bogale has been promoted to director of services at the Howard County Community Action Council.

She joined the organization in 2000 as a community worker.

As director of services, she will guide housing and energy assistance services.

The council is the county's designated anti-poverty agency that works to help low-income residents become self-sufficient.

YMCA to honor 3 as Volunteers of Year

Mary and Eric Schwartz and Jeffrey German, 13, are to be honored by the Howard County Family YMCA on Monday as Volunteers of the Year.

The awards will be presented at the annual meeting of the YMCA of Central Maryland in Baltimore.
