UVa.'s Ward questionable

May 09, 2006|By GARY LAMBRECHT

No. 1 seed Virginia (13-0) could be without senior attackman Matt Ward for at least part of the NCAA tournament. Ward, who suffered a broken right hand during last week's 11-5 victory over Maryland in the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament title game, will be evaluated again this week.

"Matt definitely wants to play. I don't think the doctors will prevent him from doing that," said Virginia coach Dom Starsia, whose Cavaliers have a first-round game against Notre Dame on Saturday. "The swelling hasn't gone down yet. We're going to see about him."

Ward ranks second on the team with 26 goals and leads the Cavaliers with 19 assists.
